The Power of Giving
By Chong Porter, Associate Vice Chancellor, Development and Alumni Relations
At UC Davis Health, we focus a lot of our work on giving. We give our patients the best care possible; we give the families who come to us confidence that we will take care of their loved ones; we give each other the best working environment, dedicated to collaborative ways of finding new and innovative solutions.
There is another aspect of giving that enables us to keep doing the amazing work we do on a daily basis –– philanthropic support. While we partner with grateful patients, alumni and donors to generate philanthropic support, as employees we can lead by example and show the power of giving by donating to an area on the UC Davis or UC Davis Health campus that resonates with our personal passions.
All of the programs at UC Davis Health fulfill the university’s mission to make the world a better place. As employees, we are not just integral to that mission, we are immersed in it. More specifically at the medical campus, we work every day to improve lives and transform healthcare. We study and find innovative ways to help patients with a number of diseases including cancer, glaucoma, autism or Alzheimer’s disease. We train the future generation of health professionals at a campus, where we are a top 10 medicine school in primary care. Whether it’s the work we do ourselves, or work done by colleagues across both campuses, your support is essential for our success as an institution and the impact we have on humanity.
I am proud of the way our faculty and staff at UC Davis Health serve the community not only through their day-to-day work, but also by their contributions through the Employee Giving Program. I also give through this program. Personally, I feel passionate about supporting the next generation of nurse leaders and physicians, as well as the research and innovative work being conducted by our teams to develop more cures for cancer. That’s why I choose to give through the payroll deduction program to support cancer programs, medical student scholarships and nursing scholarships every month.
April is Employee Giving Month at UC Davis and UC Davis Health. Last year, more than 1,300 employee donors gave during the month. I invite you to be a part of that growing number this year by investing in the community in which you live and work. You could contribute to a program that inspires you, a program you work on or even create a scholarship that honors a family, faculty or staff member. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference.
Thank you for all you do for UC Davis Health and our community!
