May is Miracle Month and it’s your opportunity to support UC Davis Children’s Hospital, the Sacramento region’s Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospital. When you shop at Costco and donate to CMN at UC Davis in May, you can help sick and injured children like Brantley and Braxton.
Born at only 24 weeks gestation, these twin boys needed life-saving treatment. The UC Davis Children’s Hospital Transport Team, funded by Children’s Miracle Network, ensured these little babies got safely from Shasta County to UC Davis Children’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Upon arrival in Sacramento, Brantley, Braxton and their parents, Christian and Payton Headrick, faced a scary reality: they needed tubes to eat, breathe and live.
“It was a second-to-second, minute-to-minute battle,” said mom, Payton. “We never wanted to leave their sides because we did not know what would happen.”
The babies had to be resuscitated every couple hours. Braxton was septic and required surgery for a bowel perforation. He also underwent Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) eye surgery to save him from blindness. The twins spent months in the NICU, but thanks to an abundance of will, Brantley and Braxton’s adventure took a turn toward home.
These once fragile boys are the epitome of toughness. Getting dirty is their mission and as was the case with their health challenges, no one is going to stop them. Although a skinned knee or twisted ankle is in their future, mom and dad welcome it because their children HAVE a future thanks to (UC?) Davis Children’s Hospital.
“Brantley’s and Braxton’s lives were at risk. We didn’t know what would happen,” Payton said. “But because the doctors and nurses are so knowledgeable, we quickly realized the boys were in the best hands. The staff became like second parents, treating our children like they were their own, providing love and care in addition to saving their lives.”
Pediatric patients, like Brantley and Braxton, and their families are featured in “Happily Ever After” collateral hung in Costco stores from Modesto to Redding. Each of these stories directly relate to how CMN donations helped to the quality of care the kids received, including funding for the Children’s Hospital Transport Team training.
Costco raised more than $33 million last year alone for CMN hospitals like UC Davis Children’s Hospital, much of it coming from members saying “yes” when cashiers asked for donations. Through May 31, you have a chance to say “yes”, too. It’s the $1, $5, $20 donations that will give more kids a chance at a “Ever After” one balloon at a time.
If you would like to make a donation to help kids like Brantley and Braxton, visit your local Costco location to donate at the register or click this link to donate to CMN at UC Davis. Big thanks to Costco and you for making a difference in the lives of local children and their families!
