As executive director of the Miss Sacramento County Scholarship Association, April Smith has been a strong supporter of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and UC Davis Children’s Hospital. She continues to give back by participating in the CMN Business Development Council and cheering up hospitalized children by organizing visits from Miss California Jessa Carmack, Miss Sacramento County Lauren Berlinn, Miss Sacramento County’s Outstanding Teen Nikki Holbrook and Miss City of Sacramento’s Outstanding Teen Violet Joy Hansen. Please meet Miracle Maker, April Smith!

How long have you been involved with Children’s Miracle Network at UC Davis?
I have been on the CMN Business Development Council for six years and I attend the board meetings, help with fundraisers, attend CMN events and visit kids in the playroom.

There are so many good causes. Why do you choose to support UC Davis Children’s Hospital?
The Miss Sacramento County program’s national platform is the Children’s Miracle Network. When I heard that I had to raise money for another program, I didn’t know how great this cause would be, but then I got to see how this donated money was being put to use and how it affected the lives of the children and families in our area.

What is your favorite memory while supporting UC Davis Children’s Hospital?
I have so many favorite memories that it is hard to decide! I love seeing the kids, who are dealing with incredibly tough circumstances, but when you see them they are just kids who are so strong and they are still smiling, laughing and enjoying the time in the UC Davis Children’s Hospital playroom with the child life specialists and volunteers.

How has being involved with UC Davis Children’s Hospital changed your life? Your family’s life?
Because of CMN, I hug my children a little tighter and appreciate my good blessings. I also don’t take for granted that at any moment they could have to be hospitalized. If that ever happened, I would want my kids to go to UC Davis Children’s Hospital.

What motivates you as a volunteer?
What motivates me is the fact that Children’s Miracle Network is changing lives of people in my community. I also love being around the CMN Business Development Council team. They are such an amazing team! It is fun to go to a board meeting or an event and know that I will be surrounded by such positive people and have so much fun. These are not boring board meetings!

What do you think about every time you volunteer for UC Davis Children’s Hospital?
I just think about the kids and how to give them a happy moment.

What do you think is the most important thing people don’t know about this hospital?
We all expect a doctor or a nurse to care about what they do and the outcome of the patient, but it is amazing to see the level of dedication that these practitioners have for their patients. They are so passionate about their work and so gentle with the kids. It is really amazing to hear their stories and the details of procedures and experience the genuine pride that these practitioners feel for their patients.

What would you say to people about why they should invest in the health of UC Davis Children’s Hospital?
They are not investing in the hospital, but in the health of the children that the hospital serves and there is no greater investment. Their donations are bringing the best and the brightest into our area so that we do not have to go anywhere else to receive the best care possible.
