As his two-year stint as chair of Children’s Miracle Network at UC Davis Business Advisory Council comes to a close, David Sobon, owner of David Sobon Auctions, is stepping down to welcome new leadership. As of Aug. 1, 2016, Rita Gibson will chair the Children’s Miracle Network at UC Davis Business Advisory Council. Gibson brings a plethora of positive energy and, of course, the blue and gold enthusiasm only a UC Davis alumnus can bring. Please meet Miracle Maker, Rita Gibson.

How long have you been involved with Children’s Miracle Network at UC Davis?

I’ve been involved with CMN for about four years now. I love the UC Davis connection – I am an alumni and blue and gold run through my veins.

Four years ago, I was looking to become involved with a charitable organization that worked with kids. Jacquelyn Mills, director of Children’s Miracle Network at UC Davis, shared all of the great stuff happening at UC Davis Children’s Hospital. I was impressed with how dedicated the medical team is to their patients and their families.

Through my involvement with Children’s Miracle Network at UC Davis, I get to learn about the good that’s done right here in our community, with the special surgeries to save kids, the medical specialists who are coming to UC Davis to work and do their research, and other life-saving projects, like Project ADAM. I am continually impressed with the university’s forward thinking approach to children’s care.

In August, I’ll replace David Sobon as the new chair of the Business Advisory Council. I’m very excited to serve in this capacity to raise funds to continue the good work of the medical team and the hospital.

There are so many good causes. Why do you choose to support UC Davis Children’s Hospital?

Why should one of our local children have to go to San Francisco for their care? It’s so difficult for young families to travel outside of the area for care. UC Davis Children’s Hospital is the Sacramento region’s only nationally ranked, comprehensive hospital for children, offering children and their families the highest level of care for virtually every pediatric health condition.

I love UC Davis Children’s Hospital and all the good they do.

UC Davis is a great research university and the hospital works to bring the most advanced and best care providers here to the Sacramento region. I even switched my company’s health insurance policy so we could have UC Davis Medical Group and UC Davis Medical Center as part of our health plan. That was very important to our company.

What is your favorite memory while supporting UC Davis Children’s Hospital?

Presentation of a $5,000 grant from the Million Dollar Round Table Foundation.

My favorite memory was being able to present a $5,000 grant from the Million Dollar Round Table Foundation in 2015 to benefit UC Davis Children’s Hospital. As a Life and Qualifying Member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), I love helping others with their financial needs, and ensuring that they are prepared in the event of a catastrophe. I work with other MDRT members, not for accolades and personal gain, but to provide peace of mind, save lives, and protect the futures of my clients. The MDRT grant provides food, lodging and transportation assistance for low-income families while their children are hospitalized.

How has being involved with UC Davis Children’s Hospital changed your life? Your family’s life?

Through my involvement, I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of great people and it’s enabled me to be more involved with my alma mater, UC Davis. I recently made the decision to leave a portion of my IRA account to Children’s Miracle Network so that when I’m gone, the work for kids can continue.

What motivates you as a volunteer?

The great people on the Business Advisory Council and all the enthusiasm of our local partners.

What’s amazing to me is that a lot of our funds are raised a dollar or two at a time through our partners. I really appreciate our partners like Dairy Queen, Costco, Wal-Mart and IHOP. I like going to the stores and thanking the cashiers who make the ask. I also love to support IHOP Pancake Day. It is fun when the community turns out to support CMN – all while enjoying delicious pancakes together.

The funds raised through these events go toward life-saving equipment for the hospital, patient care and research. These funds also pay for special assistance for kids with challenging conditions, they pay for the Halloween parties, and support for families who are spending most of their time in the hospital with their sick child during holidays.

What do you think is the most important thing people don’t know about this hospital?

That it’s a local gem. We have a jewel right here in our community. It’s been a secret, but now we’re shouting out so people know that UC Davis Children’s Hospital is here to benefit the kids of our region.

What would you say to people about why they should invest in the health of UC Davis Children’s Hospital?

Do it for the kids. They are our future. Let’s keep them here by having them receive their care here. We have world-renowned sports teams like Sacramento Republic FC, world class art at the Crocker Art Museum, why not support a great children’s hospital?  It’s very important for our families.
